Not far from Seligenstadt’s historic market square once stood a 19th-century synagogue.

The available sources for the reconstruction were limited. No architectural plans exist. However, experts from the historic preservation office examined the remaining ruins as early as 2007 and developed a floor plan. In addition, several photographs were available in the city archives. This made the reconstruction possible. Based on a very detailed image of the interior showing the gate shrine, the bimah, and the women’s galleries to the south and north, the reconstruction of the interior was developed. However, only this single view of the interior had been preserved—not the view to the west toward the entrance. Thus, an attempt was made to transfer the elements known from the interior photograph to the western section and, together with analyses of the building’s structural logic, to develop the reconstruction of the western gallery.
